Artificial Surf Reef a Bust

Friday, January 30th, 2009

Waaay down under in New Zealand, Mt Maunganui’s $1.5 million artificial surf reef  has been virtually ignored by surfers since it was completed last June.

Hopes were high the reef would finally achieve its potential once the last sandbags were anchored to the seabed nearly eight months ago, but Tauranga surfing commentator Josh Guinness said the reef had all but failed to create better quality waves.

All that money and still no waves… what a bummer!

Speaking of Sewage

Saturday, January 17th, 2009

As an addition to our recent post about the sewage problem in Malibu, CA, here is about story about a sewage sniffing dog in Michigan!

Sable, a German Shepherd mix, may be the world’s only sewage-sniffing dog.

His trainer, environmental scientist Scott Reynolds, has taught Sable to sniff out and detect human sewage and surfactants used in household detergents. Sable has been working in the Michigan area this past summer and is the only dog trained in this field. Sable has an accuracy rate of 87% and is now in his second year on the job. He was rescued by his trainer from a shelter in Lake Odessa.

“Dogs have a better ability than humans to filter out background scents,” says Reynolds. “For instance, a person can smell the scent of beef stew. A dog can smell the ingredients.”

Surf and Sewage in Malibu

Thursday, January 8th, 2009

For all you Indo enthusiasts who are surfers there’s a recent article in the Los Angeles Times that you don’t want to miss: “Surf, sewage form a combustible mix in Malibu”

Surfers from around the globe make Malibu Beach, CA their surfing destination but most don’t know that every time they paddle out at this world-famous break they’re putting their health on the line.

Underneath all those multi-million dollar homes of the rich and famous lies an aging and broken septic system that often sends raw sewage into the peeling rights that break off the point, sickening many who surf there.

While you can stay in shape for your next surf session with an Indo Board it can’t protect you from hepatitis or some other sickening bacteria!

C’mon all you rich and famous Malibu-ites… get your “you-know-what’” together!!!!
