Malibu Beach Makes Me Sick

Tuesday, June 30th, 2009

Nevermind that Malibu is a city filled with celebs, mulit-million dollar houses and lays claim to one of the best and most famous surfing breaks in the world -  the water there will make you sick… literally!!

Malibu Surfrider beach is becoming less famous for Gidet, Moondog and sweet summer swells and more famous for leaking septic tanks, sinus infections, ear infections, eye infections and diarrhea.

With all the millionaires that live there you’d think they’d clean up their collective acts… guess they’re so busy saving everyone elses environment they’re too busy or too thoughless to clean up their own backyards.

C’mon folks… stop polluting the ocean and get a sewer system already… it’s not like you can’t afford it!!!

You can get more info at the Surfrider Foundations West Los Angeles. Malibu Chapter…

Skateboard Champ Hurt But Happy

Wednesday, June 24th, 2009

Sam Schoonderwoerd, from Carlsbad, CA,  won the Gatorade Free Flow Tour skateboarding contest earlier this month but had to sit rather than stand at the podium to receive his award.

Seems the 13 year old champion re-injured a nagging groin injury on his way to winning the vert competition and accepted his award with ice bag in hand, or should we say groin.

“It feels really good, but I’d be a lot happier if I wasn’t in pain,” said Schoonderwoerd. ” I tried to do every trick – inverts, flips, twists – and I stayed on almost the whole time. It’s the best I’ve done.”

With the victory comes a trip to the national finals in Salt Lake City from Sept. 17-20. Let’s hope Schoonderwoerd can get himself healed up in time for his next big skate.  :-)

Surfrider Blocks Florida Dredging Project – Saves Waves

Friday, June 19th, 2009

Surfrider Foundation’s Florida Chapters have a lot to celebrate with the recent ruling on the beach dredge and fill project at “Reach 8″  beach.

In ruling to block the project, he judge who heard the case, Robert E. Meale, criticized the project for its potentially damaging environmental effects, which include ecosystem disruption and coral reef damage and denounced as “worthless” some of the engineering behind it.

Beach dredge and fill projects have been a commonplace practice in eastern Florida to combat erosion issues, but many argue they have done more harm than good. The Surfrider Foundation has at least temporarily blocked this dredge and fill project that without due dilligence could wreak havoc on this beautiful beach.
